🇻🇳Phú Quốc Travel Guide: Island Vibes, Wildlife & Hidden Gems Through My Lens

From white-sand beaches and jungle-backed bays to wildlife encounters and lively towns — Phú Quốc blends natural beauty, island culture, and unexpected adventure in ways few tropical destinations do.

Phú Quốc, Vietnam’s largest island, floats in the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand just off the coast of Cambodia. From powdery white-sand beaches and palm-fringed coastlines to dense jungles and quiet fishing villages, this island is a place of contrasts — where authentic local life meets rapidly growing resorts, and calm mornings can turn into lively evenings at bustling night markets.

More than half of the island is protected as Phú Quốc National Park, a dense tropical forest filled with hiking trails, wildlife, and panoramic viewpoints. At the heart of the island lies Dương Đông, the largest town and perfect base for exploring — filled with markets, cafés, gyms, restaurants, and ferry points for island hopping adventures.

More than half of the island is protected as Phú Quốc National Park, a dense tropical forest filled with hiking trails, wildlife, and panoramic viewpoints. At the heart of the island lies Dương Đông, the largest town and perfect base for exploring — filled with markets, cafés, gyms, restaurants, and ferry points for island-hopping adventures.

Key Neighborhoods & Highlights

  • Dương Đông: Main town with restaurants, markets, gyms, cafés, and nightlife

  • Long Beach (Bãi Trường): Famous west coast beach stretch, ideal for sunsets, resorts, and beach bars

  • Sunset Town & An Thới: Southern gateway for island hopping, snorkeling, cable car, and boutique cafés

  • North Coast & Phú Quốc National Park: Less developed, perfect for forest hikes, waterfalls, wildlife spotting, and quiet fishing villages

From remote beaches to European-style entertainment complexes, Phú Quốc constantly surprises. This guide follows my journey through the island, highlighting the neighborhoods, hidden gems, beaches, wellness escapes, local cuisine, and unforgettable experiences that make Phú Quốc both a tropical paradise and endlessly fascinating.

🎟️ Phú Quốc Play & Stay Travel Pass

If you’re planning to experience multiple attractions while on the island, the Phú Quốc Play & Stay Travel Pass is worth considering. It bundles several of the island’s most popular experiences into one convenient booking — which can save both time and money.

This pass is especially useful if you’re planning to do things like:

  • 🚠 The cable car ride over the An Thới islands

  • 🚤 Island hopping and snorkeling tours

  • 🌊 Select beach and water experiences

  • 🎢 Major attraction entries

Instead of booking everything separately, you can streamline your itinerary and potentially reduce overall costs.

💡 Is It Worth It?

The pass makes the most sense if:

  • You’re staying 3+ days

  • You plan to do multiple paid attractions

  • You prefer booking in advance rather than organizing activities last-minute

If you’re only doing one activity, individual tickets may be better. But if your itinerary includes cable cars, island tours, or bundled attractions — this can be a smart move.

Phú Quốc is a tropical island of white-sand beaches, jungle escapes, and lively local life — a first look at Vietnam’s hidden gem.

My First Impressions of Phú Quốc

Episode 1: Phú Quốc | First Impressions | “HIDDEN GEM 💎 or ✈️TOURIST TRAP?” | Vietnam 🇻🇳

From white-sand beaches and jungle-backed bays to bustling towns and hidden corners, Phú Quốc is a tropical island of contrasts.

Phú Quốc is a Vietnamese island located just off the coast of Cambodia, floating in the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Known for its powdery white-sand beaches, palm-fringed shorelines, and laid-back resort atmosphere, the island has quickly become one of Vietnam’s most sought-after tropical escapes.

But it’s not just about beaches.

More than half of the island is protected as Phú Quốc National Park, a lush expanse of dense jungle, hiking trails, rolling hills, waterfalls (during rainy season), and diverse wildlife. The contrast between wild jungle and luxury beachfront resorts is part of what makes the island so unique.

At the heart of the island is Dương Đông, the largest town and the most convenient base for exploring. This is where you’ll find the famous night market, local restaurants, cafés, gyms, and easy access to Long Beach.

Where I Stayed:

Getting Around Phú Quốc

Grab App: Convenient for short rides within Dương Đông and Long Beach. Ideal for quick trips to restaurants, cafés, or nearby attractions.

Scooter Rentals: Flexible and popular for confident riders who want to explore beaches, towns, and scenic roads at their own pace.

Private Cars: Perfect for full-day tours, multiple beaches, or island-hopping trips. Can be booked in advance through 12go.

Taxis: Available but more expensive than Grab or private cars.

Tip: Plan extra travel time — traveling north to south across the island can take 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and stops.

🌊 A Quick Note About Northern Beaches

When researching the northern beaches of Phú Quốc, you may see recommendations for some of the more remote stretches of coastline. I personally chose not to visit one of the far northern beaches after reading multiple recent reviews mentioning garbage and debris along the shore. Conditions can change seasonally, but it’s always smart to check updated reviews before heading out.

⭐ About Starfish Beach

Starfish Beach is one of the most photographed spots in Phú Quốc — known for its shallow turquoise water and bright red starfish. It’s absolutely beautiful, but there are a few things you should know before visiting:

  • 🚗 You can take Grab there, which makes getting to the beach easy.

  • 💵 Have cash ready for your return — either for a taxi or pre-arrange pickup with your driver, as finding a ride back can be difficult.

  • 🚤 You’ll need to pay a small fee for a local boat ride to reach the clearest section of the beach. It’s only a few dollars and completely worth it.

  • 📵 There is little to no cell service once you arrive. Download maps and confirm your ride plans ahead of time.

  • 🌊 Please respect the wildlife — avoid lifting starfish out of the water for photos.

It’s still an unforgettable experience — just go prepared so the day feels smooth and stress-free.

Highlights of My First Days

🌴 Sunset Beach Club: Chill beachfront lounge, perfect for sunset cocktails.

🍜 AC Noodles: Authentic Vietnamese noodle dishes with fresh seafood and herbs.

🍕 The Home Pizza: Casual Italian fare after a day of beach exploration.

🌊 Starfish Beach (Starfish Island): Shallow sandbars and calm waters, ideal for snorkeling. Best visited early morning for fewer crowds.

🏖 Versailles Spa Restaurant & Hotel: Free beach chairs with any purchase. Great for sunset views and seafood.

🔥 Ngon Oto: Trendy Vietnamese and fusion dishes with a lively evening atmosphere.

💪 Gym & Wellness Spots: Dương Đông has gyms and wellness centers offering day passes — I worked out at The World of Gym 4

🌅 Ocsen Beach Bar & Club: Sunset drinks, beanbags, music, and social island vibes.

Up-close wildlife adventures you didn’t expect on Phú Quốc!” 🦒🐘

🎬 Episode 2: Did Not Expect this in Phú Quốc - Vinpearl Safari

Vinpearl Safari in Phú Quốc is one of the island’s most unexpected adventures — a peaceful wildlife park that combines up-close animal encounters with educational charm.

There are two main times to visit the park: morning/daytime and evening. I went in the morning, which is when the safari section in the back of the park is open. The safari tour runs until about 3 PM, so I recommend doing this first if you want to maximize your visit.

After the safari, I had lunch at the Giraffe Restaurant, where you can purchase food to feed the giraffes — an experience that’s as fun as it is memorable. Beyond the safari, many of the exhibits at the front of the park allow hands-on interactions. You can buy food for the animals, feed them, or even touch and pet some of the friendlier species, like the lemurs.

The park is perfect for families, solo travelers, or anyone who loves wildlife and immersive experiences. From watching giraffes and zebras roam freely to walking among smaller animals up close, Vinpearl Safari offers a mix of adventure, learning, and relaxation in a beautifully maintained setting.

From storybook streets to bustling night markets — discover Phú Quốc!

🎬 Episode 3: Is This Vietnam’s Hidden Paradise? 🇻🇳 Grandworld + Sunset Town + Night Markets

Phú Quốc continues to surprise with its unexpected mix of culture, entertainment, and local charm. On this part of my journey, I explored some of the island’s most lively and photogenic spots: Grand World, Sunset Town, and the Phú Quốc Night Market.

Grand World

Grand World immediately caught my eye with its whimsical, almost European-style architecture — colorful streets, fountains, and piazza-like squares that make it feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook town. Walking through the area honestly feels a bit like arriving in a colorful version of Venice, with canals, bridges, and vibrant buildings lining the streets.

The park area outside is especially beautiful, filled with fountains, sculptures, and tons of photo opportunities. It’s a very walkable area where you can simply wander and explore the plazas, canals, and shops at your own pace.

One of the best things about Grand World is that most of the area is completely free to explore. The only attractions you’ll pay for are optional experiences like the gondola-style boat ride through the canal or entry into the Teddy Bear Museum. Otherwise, you can enjoy the colorful architecture, restaurants, and entertainment areas without purchasing anything.

There are also many restaurants and cafés throughout the complex, making it a great place to stop for lunch or dinner while exploring.

On certain nights, Grand World also hosts fireworks, adding even more energy to the area once the sun goes down.

One thing to keep in mind: there is a lot of walking here, so comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.

Sunset Town

Another area that surprised me was Sunset Town. This colorful seaside complex feels like stepping into multiple European destinations at once.

As you wander through the streets you’ll notice architecture inspired by places like Positano, Verona, Venice, and even structures inspired by the famous Colosseum.

The pastel buildings cascade down toward the ocean, creating one of the most photogenic spots on the island.

Sunset Town also hosts a night market and evening show with fireworks. If you want reserved seats for the show you can purchase tickets, but a great tip is that many restaurants above the main square offer views of the fireworks, so you can often watch while enjoying dinner.

Like Grand World, there is a lot of walking here, especially with the stairs and hillside streets, so comfortable shoes are helpful.

Phu Quoc Night Market

No trip to Phu Quoc is complete without visiting the lively night market in Dương Đông.

This bustling market is the best place on the island to experience local food, street snacks, seafood, desserts, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is energetic and vibrant, with vendors grilling fresh seafood, selling tropical desserts, and offering local specialties.

Phu Quoc is famous for its pearl farms, so you’ll also find many stalls selling pearl jewelry. If you plan to buy pearls, make sure the vendor performs the burn test to prove authenticity — real pearls won’t melt or smell like plastic when briefly exposed to heat. Many vendors are used to showing this to buyers.

The night market is also a great spot to try different foods and soak up the local energy after a day of exploring.

Insider Tips: Getting Around Grand World & Sunset Town

  • Grab App: Convenient for general transport, but motorbike drivers can be hard to find in remote areas like Grand World. Cars are easier to book.

  • Private Drivers via 12Go: Ideal for airport transfers or longer trips. Book cars, vans, buses, or ferries hassle-free. 12Go

  • Bring Cash: Some taxis or local arrangements may only accept cash.

Phú Quốc’s hidden corners are best explored by boat. From uninhabited islets and turquoise waters to quiet white-sand beaches, island hopping here feels like stepping into a tropical dream. Snorkel among colorful fish, lounge on serene beaches, and enjoy the calm island life that makes Phú Quốc so unique.

The tour also takes you to a private island for some extra fun, and includes a delicious, authentic Vietnamese lunch — perfect for refueling between adventures. You’ll also enjoy a scenic cable car ride connecting nearby islands, offering stunning views of the Gulf of Thailand. It’s a full day of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.

Insider Tips:

  • Bring swim gear & towels — the boat tour provides minimal equipment, so pack essentials.

  • Protect yourself from the sun — reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a must.

Health & Safety Tips 🛡️

Vietnam is breathtaking, but like any true adventure, it’s important to stay prepared. From island-hopping boats to jungle hikes, every experience brings unforgettable moments — and a few things you’ll want to plan for in advance:

🦟 Mosquitoes & Dengue: The tropics mean mosquitoes, and dengue fever is a real risk. Always pack bug spray and reapply often, especially at dusk.

🚰 Water Safety: Avoid drinking tap water, even for brushing your teeth. Stick to bottled or filtered water to keep your trip worry-free.

🛡️ Travel Insurance: This is essential! From unexpected illness and lost luggage to sudden changes of plans, having coverage keeps the focus on your journey — not the stress. In Vietnam, accidents are unfortunately common: I’ve witnessed everything from motorbike accidents to cuts on coral while exploring the islands. I haven’t seen it all, and you never know what might happen — that’s why travel insurance is non-negotiable.

I personally recommend two trusted options:

World Nomads

Great for short-term and adventure coverage.

Safety Wing

Ideal for long-term travelers and digital nomads, you can start or cancel anytime on the road, claims are super easy to make on their website & then paid within 48hrs.
