Savannah, Georgia

Episode: The Most Beautiful Historic City in America?πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Savannah, Georgia is one of the most historically significant cities in the United States, founded in 1733 along the Savannah River. Known for its oak-lined streets, preserved colonial architecture, and distinctive grid of public squares, the city offers one of the most walkable and visually cohesive historic districts in the country.

Its layout of 22 historic squares is one of its defining features, creating a city design that blends green spaces, monuments, and surrounding historic architecture into a continuous walking experience.

🏨 Where I Stayed

During my visit, I stayed at Palawan Uno Hotel, a comfortable hotel conveniently located near the airport and just a short drive from the city center.

The property features spacious grounds, a large swimming pool, and a relaxed atmosphere, making it a great base for exploring Puerto Princesa before continuing your travels through Palawan.

For travelers heading to El Nido, Coron, or catching a flight back to Manila, the location makes it especially convenient.

🌳 Parks & Green Spaces

Forsyth Park is the city’s most recognized green space, featuring wide walking paths, shaded oak trees, and its iconic central fountain. It serves as a major gathering point within the historic district.

Adjacent to the park, the Forsyth Farmers’ Market (9am–1pm) operates as a seasonal open-air market offering local produce, baked goods, and artisan products.

The site of the original Trustees’ Garden reflects Savannah’s early colonial agricultural planning and settlement history, dating back to the city’s founding era.

πŸ›οΈ Historic Squares, Streets & Landmarks

Savannah’s identity is defined by its system of historic squares, each designed as a green public space surrounded by architecture, monuments, and cultural landmarks. These squares are what make the city one of the most walkable historic destinations in the United States.

Key historic squares include:

  • Chippewa Square – one of the most recognizable squares, known for its connection to Forrest Gump

  • Monterey Square – home to the Mercer-Williams House and one of the most architecturally significant areas

  • Columbia Square – laid out in 1799, featuring preserved historic buildings and quiet residential character

  • Madison Square – surrounded by notable historic homes and monuments

  • Reynolds Square – one of the oldest squares, located near key downtown landmarks

  • Johnson Square – Savannah’s first and largest square, established in the original city plan

  • Wright Square – historically significant and centrally located within the grid

One of the most iconic streets, Jones Street, is widely considered one of the most beautiful residential streets in America, known for its tree canopy, historic homes, and preserved architecture. It is also culturally associated with the phrase β€œkeeping up with the Joneses,” referring to social comparison and status.

Major landmarks within the historic district include:

  • Mercer-Williams House – associated with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

  • Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist – one of the most important churches architecturally in the South

  • Colonial Park Cemetery – Savannah’s oldest public cemetery

  • Savannah Theatre (1818) – one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the United States

  • Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum – founder of the Girl Scouts

  • Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters – preserved historic home with guided tours

  • Kehoe House – widely associated with ghost stories and historic lore

  • Isaiah Davenport House – first home preserved by the Savannah Foundation

🌊 Riverfront District & City Market

The Savannah Riverfront is a major waterfront area combining historic warehouses, cobblestone walkways, restaurants, and river views.

River Street is the central promenade of the district, known for its converted industrial buildings, dining, shopping, and active waterfront atmosphere.

Nearby, the Plant Riverside District (JW Marriott Savannah) is a redeveloped historic power plant complex that combines industrial heritage with modern entertainment, restaurants, and design.

City Market serves as a historic mixed-use district with galleries, dining, and nightlife located within restored market buildings.

🚌 Getting Around & Traveling to Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is a major transportation hub in Palawan with a full airport, making it a common starting or ending point for travelers visiting destinations like El Nido or Coron. Most visitors either fly into the city or travel by road from El Nido.

🚐 El Nido to Puerto Princesa: Bus vs Van

If you're traveling between El Nido and Puerto Princesa, you'll typically see two options:

β€’ Shared vans 🚫
β€’ Public buses βœ…

While vans are often marketed as the faster option, the bus is usually the better choice.

The journey takes about 4–5 hours, and the road between the two destinations is extremely windy and mountainous. Many travelers warned me that the vans can feel cramped β€” you're often packed tightly into small seats with little room to move, which can quickly lead to motion sickness.

The bus ride is much more comfortable, offering proper seats, more space, and a smoother ride. Surprisingly, it usually arrives in almost the same amount of time as the vans.

For anyone prone to motion sickness or who prefers a more comfortable journey, the bus is the clear winner.

πŸ›Ί Local Transportation in Puerto Princesa

Getting around Puerto Princesa is simple and affordable. The most common way to travel short distances is by motorized tricycle, which functions similarly to a taxi for short city rides.

The primary tricycle-hailing app in Puerto Princesa is Backride Pinas (formerly Backride Palawan). Using the app makes it easy to request rides, avoid negotiating fares, and move around the city more conveniently.

Tricycles are ideal for quick trips to places like:

β€’ Puerto Princesa Baywalk Park
β€’ Local restaurants and markets
β€’ Hotels and nearby attractions

πŸŒ… Final Thoughts

Puerto Princesa is often seen as a gateway to other destinations in Palawan, but the city itself offers more than many travelers expect. With its coastal views, lively night markets, local restaurants, and access to one of the most famous natural wonders in the Philippines, it’s a destination that deserves more than just a quick stopover.

Whether you're visiting the UNESCO-listed Underground River, exploring nearby islands, or simply enjoying a stroll along the baywalk, Puerto Princesa provides a relaxed introduction to the beauty and culture of Palawan.

For travelers heading to El Nido, Coron, or other parts of the Philippines, spending a little time here is well worth it.

Health & Safety Tips πŸ›‘οΈ

The Philippines is breathtaking, but like any true adventure, it’s important to stay prepared. From island-hopping boats to jungle hikes, every experience brings unforgettable moments β€” and a few things you’ll want to plan for in advance:

🦟 Mosquitoes & Dengue: The tropics mean mosquitoes, and dengue fever is a real risk. Always pack bug spray and reapply often, especially at dusk.

🚰 Water Safety: Avoid drinking tap water, even for brushing your teeth. Stick to bottled or filtered water to keep your trip worry-free.

πŸ›‘οΈ Travel Insurance: This is essential! From unexpected illness and lost luggage to sudden changes of plans, having coverage keeps the focus on your journey β€” not the stress. In the Philippines, accidents are unfortunately common: I’ve witnessed everything from motorbike accidents to cuts on coral while exploring the islands. I haven’t seen it all, and you never know what might happen β€” that’s why travel insurance is non-negotiable.

I personally recommend two trusted options:
