Why Malta 🇲🇹

One of the most defining chapters in Malta's history began in 1530, when the Knights of St. John arrived on the islands. Their legacy became closely tied to the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, when the Knights and Maltese defenders resisted a major Ottoman assault. Following the siege, the Knights established the fortified city of Valletta, named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette. Today, Valletta's historic streets, bastions, churches, and palaces preserve this remarkable chapter of Malta's past.

The Knights of St. John also shaped Malta's artistic and architectural legacy. This influence is especially visible at St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, where a relatively restrained exterior contrasts with an elaborate Baroque interior featuring gilded decoration, intricate marble tombstones, and masterpieces by the celebrated artist Caravaggio.

In 1798, Napoleon's French forces took control of Malta, but British rule followed in 1800. The islands later became a strategically important British base in the Mediterranean. During World War II, Malta endured extensive bombing because of its military position, and its wartime resilience remains an important part of the nation's history.

Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. Today, Malta is an independent Mediterranean nation and a member of the European Union, with a distinctive culture shaped by centuries of outside influence and a strong national identity.

As you explore Malta, its history isn't confined to museums or books. It's woven into Valletta's historic streets, Mdina's fortified walls, prehistoric temples, churches, fortifications, and traditions still celebrated today. Understanding Malta's past makes visiting these places even more meaningful and adds another dimension to exploring this remarkable Mediterranean destination.

Malta’s History: Ancient Civilizations, Knights & Mediterranean Heritage

🏛️ Explore Malta’s fascinating past, from prehistoric temples and the Knights of St. John to its rich cultural heritage.

Malta's history stretches back thousands of years, making it one of the most historically fascinating destinations in the Mediterranean. Located between Europe and North Africa, the Maltese islands have long occupied an important position along Mediterranean maritime routes, attracting civilizations, traders, rulers, and military powers who each left their mark on the islands' culture and landscape.

Long before Valletta's grand fortifications and Mdina's medieval streets existed, Malta was home to prehistoric communities that built remarkable megalithic temples. Sites such as Ħaġar Qim offer a glimpse into these ancient societies and form an important part of Malta's extraordinary archaeological heritage.

Over the centuries, Malta came under the influence of several powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and the Spanish Crown. Each period contributed to the islands' evolving language, architecture, traditions, and distinctive cultural identity.

🏙️ Valletta: Things to Do & Must-See Landmarks

Valletta, Malta's historic capital, is filled with Baroque architecture, centuries of history, charming streets, and spectacular views across the Mediterranean. Founded by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Malta.

What I loved about Valletta was discovering the city on foot. Much of the historic center is pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to wander through narrow streets, admire traditional Maltese balconies, and discover beautiful architecture along the way. Yes, there are hills and steep streets, but don't let them scare you! Every climb brings the possibility of something magical around the next corner, whether it's an unexpected view, a beautiful church, a historic building, or a glimpse of the Mediterranean.

📍 Best Things to Do in Valletta

1. Visit St. John's Co-Cathedral

One of Valletta's most extraordinary landmarks, St. John's Co-Cathedral is famous for its elaborate Baroque interior, gilded decoration, intricate marble tombstones, and masterpieces by Caravaggio. The contrast between its relatively understated exterior and richly decorated interior makes it a must-see. Admission was €15 when I visited, so check current ticket prices before your trip.

2. Wander Valletta's Historic Streets

Exploring the streets is an experience in itself. Look for colorful traditional balconies, ornate doorways, historic palaces, little cafés, and architectural details that tell the story of Malta's past. Valletta is largely explored on foot, so wear comfortable shoes and give yourself time to wander without rushing from one landmark to the next.

3. Discover the Legacy of the Knights of St. John

Valletta was established after the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, and the Knights of St. John shaped much of its architecture and history. As you explore, you'll see impressive fortifications, churches, monuments, and grand buildings that reflect the city's strategic importance in the Mediterranean.

4. Enjoy the Views Across the Grand Harbour

Valletta's elevated position offers beautiful views across the Grand Harbour and toward the historic Three Cities. As you explore the city, take time to stop at viewpoints and enjoy the contrast between the honey-colored stone architecture and the blue Mediterranean Sea.

5. Experience a Traditional Maltese Festa

During my visit, I experienced the Feast of St. Dominic, when Valletta came alive with traditional celebrations, decorations, and fireworks. Maltese festas are an important part of local culture, and if your visit coincides with one, it's a wonderful opportunity to experience the islands beyond their historic landmarks.

🍴 Where to Eat in Valletta

Valletta has a fantastic food scene, from casual bites to special dining experiences. These are two places I visited during my time in the city.

Sally Port Pizzeria — A casual stop for pizza while exploring Valletta's historic center. It's a great option when you want something relaxed between sightseeing stops.

59 Republic — I enjoyed a special dining experience here at this Michelin-recognized restaurant. It's worth considering if you're looking to make a meal part of your Valletta experience.

As you wander through the city, you'll also find cafés, wine bars, and restaurants tucked into historic streets, making it easy to stop for a meal or drink along the way.

⏰ How Much Time Should You Spend in Valletta?

Allow at least half a day to explore the main sights, but a full day gives you more time to visit St. John's Co-Cathedral, wander the streets, enjoy the views, experience the local food scene, and discover places you might otherwise walk straight past.

My biggest tip? Don't let the hills put you off. Take your time, wear comfortable shoes, and keep exploring. In Valletta, some of the most memorable moments happen when you turn a corner and discover something you weren't expecting.

🏘️ Mdina & Rabat: Things to Do in Malta's Silent City

Mdina is one of Malta's most captivating historic destinations. Known as the Silent City, this beautifully preserved medieval walled city is filled with narrow winding streets, honey-colored limestone buildings, ornate doorways, and centuries of history. Walking through its quiet streets feels like stepping into another time.

During my visit, I explored Mdina and nearby Rabat on a guided Tuk Tuk tour, which was a fun way to discover the area's history, landmarks, and surrounding countryside. From medieval architecture and incredible viewpoints to charming streets and historic sites, this part of Malta is a must-see.

📍 Best Things to Do in Mdina & Rabat

1. Wander Through Mdina, the Silent City

One of the best things to do in Mdina is simply get lost in its beautiful streets. Walk beneath historic archways, admire the traditional Maltese architecture, discover hidden courtyards, and take in the peaceful atmosphere that gives the city its Silent City nickname.

2. Visit Mdina Gate

The impressive Mdina Gate is one of Malta's most recognizable landmarks and the entrance to the historic walled city. If it looks familiar, Game of Thrones fans may recognize it as a filming location for King's Landing. It's also one of the most photographed spots in Mdina.

3. Explore St. Paul's Cathedral & Cathedral Square

Located in the heart of Mdina, St. Paul's Cathedral is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Take time to admire the cathedral's exterior, explore the surrounding square, and appreciate the history of this remarkable city.

4. Discover Mdina's Historic Streets & Viewpoints

As you explore, look beyond the main streets. Mdina has beautiful balconies, ornate doorways, historic palaces, and quiet corners waiting to be discovered. The city walls also offer spectacular views across Malta's countryside.

5. Explore Rabat

Just outside Mdina's fortified walls is Rabat, a town with its own fascinating history and character. Rabat is known for its historic churches, traditional streets, and archaeological sites, including St. Paul's Catacombs, which offer a glimpse into Malta's early Christian history.

6. Take a Tuk Tuk Tour Through Mdina & the Surrounding Area

I booked a 1.5-hour Mdina, Rabat & Dingli Tuk Tuk Tour through GetYourGuide, and it was a fun way to explore beyond the city walls. We discovered historic landmarks, learned about the area's fascinating past, and took in some incredible countryside and coastal scenery. If you'd like to experience these places without having to navigate everything yourself, this is a great tour to consider.

🌊 Discover Dingli Cliffs & Qarraba Bay

One of the highlights of exploring this part of Malta was visiting the dramatic coastline around Dingli and Qarraba Bay.

Qarraba Bay is easily one of the most stunning coastal landscapes I've seen, and possibly one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its unusual rock formations, dramatic cliffs, and striking colors make it feel almost otherworldly.

I also hiked to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the bay. Seeing the coastline from above was worth the effort and gave me an entirely different perspective of Malta's natural beauty. If you love scenic landscapes, photography, and getting off the beaten path, don't miss this part of the island.

🍽️ Food & Restaurants in Mdina & Rabat

Mdina and neighboring Rabat have some wonderful places to stop for a meal, coffee, or something sweet while exploring the historic streets. From charming tea gardens and scenic dining spots to traditional Maltese bakeries and local specialties, food is another reason to spend time in this part of the island.

  • Fontanella Tea Garden (Mdina): Famous for its delicious cakes, especially its chocolate cake, and beautiful views from its terrace.

  • Coogi's Restaurant & Tea Garden (Mdina): A charming spot for a meal or a relaxing break while exploring the Silent City.

  • CHALK Café Eatery Wine (Rabat): A lovely café for food, coffee, or a relaxed stop while exploring Rabat.

  • Crystal Palace (Rabat): A local favorite known for its traditional Maltese pastizzi.

  • Grotto Tavern (Rabat): A unique restaurant set inside a natural cave, offering a memorable dining atmosphere.

🍪 Traditional Maltese Treats & Local Favorites

Don't leave Malta without trying some of its traditional sweets and local flavors. These specialties are worth looking for while visiting Mdina and Rabat:

  • Pastizzi: Malta's iconic flaky, savory pastries, traditionally filled with ricotta cheese or mushy peas. They're inexpensive, delicious, and a must-try. Crystal Palace in Rabat is especially famous for them.

  • Qagħaq tal-Għasel (Honey Rings): Traditional Maltese pastries filled with a sweet, spiced honey and treacle mixture.

  • Imqaret: Diamond-shaped pastries filled with dates, traditionally fried and often served warm. Their soft, date-filled centers may remind you of a fig cookie.

  • Kinnie: Malta's famous bittersweet soft drink made with bitter oranges and aromatic herbs. It's a local classic and something different to try.

  • Maltese Tuna Sandwich: Look for a traditional tuna sandwich featuring ingredients such as tomatoes, olives, capers, and tuna, often served on Maltese bread.

Exploring Malta isn't just about the history and scenery—make time to enjoy the local food, too!

⏰ How Much Time Should You Spend in Mdina & Rabat?

You can explore Mdina in a few hours, but I recommend allowing additional time for Rabat and the surrounding countryside. If you want to include a guided tour, Dingli Cliffs, and Qarraba Bay, plan for at least half a day.

Mdina is one of those places where it's worth slowing down, wandering without a strict schedule, and appreciating the history and atmosphere around you.

🏝️ Comino & Gozo: Blue Lagoon, Island Adventures & Sunset

A visit to Malta wouldn't be complete without exploring its neighboring islands, Comino and Gozo. I experienced both on one incredible day trip that combined hotel pickup and drop-off, a private boat ride, swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon, exploring Gozo by buggy, and ending the day with an unforgettable sunset.

Our day began with pickup directly from our hotel before heading to Cirkewwa, where we boarded a private boat to explore the coastline around Comino.

💎 Comino & the Famous Blue Lagoon

Our boat trip took us around Comino, where we passed the impressive Elephant Rock and stopped to take pictures of the beautiful Santa Marija Caves.

One of the highlights was our swim stop at the famous Blue Lagoon, where the crystal-clear turquoise water is even more incredible in person. We also had the opportunity to enjoy the Crystal Lagoon. Having time to swim and take in the scenery made this part of the excursion especially memorable.

🚙 Explore Gozo by Buggy

From Comino, we continued to Gozo, where the next adventure began. Instead of exploring by traditional sightseeing bus, we hopped into buggies and set off to discover the island with experienced local drivers.

This was such a fun way to see more of Gozo in one day. Along the route, we visited some of the island's most notable places, including:

  • Victoria & the Citadel: Gozo's historic fortified city, with incredible views and centuries of history.

  • Ġgantija Temples: An extraordinary prehistoric temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entrance was optional and not included in the tour.

  • Sanap Cliffs: Dramatic coastal scenery and spectacular views over the Mediterranean.

  • Xlendi Bay: A beautiful seaside area surrounded by cliffs and clear blue water.

  • Ta' Pinu Basilica: One of Gozo's most impressive and important religious landmarks.

  • Dwejra: A striking coastal landscape known for its unusual rock formations and geological features.

Seeing so many different sides of Gozo in one day made this excursion a real highlight of my time in Malta.

🌅 Sunset at the Gozo Salt Pans

But the experience wasn't over yet! We continued to the famous Gozo salt pans, where we enjoyed traditional pizza, wine, and water as the sun began to set.

Afterward, we headed up to a beautiful spot on the mountain, where blankets and pillows were laid out for us. We settled in with food and drinks and watched the sun disappear over the landscape. It was such a special way to end the day, and honestly, one of my favorite experiences in Malta.

As the evening came to a close, we returned to Mġarr Harbour, where our boat was waiting to take us back to Malta. Our transportation then brought us directly back to our hotel. Having pickup and drop-off included made the entire experience easy and enjoyable from beginning to end.

🎟️ Book the Comino Blue Lagoon & Gozo Sunset Buggy Tour

If you want to experience both Comino and Gozo in one day, this is an excursion worth considering. Between the private boat ride, Blue Lagoon swim stop, Gozo buggy adventure, sightseeing, food, and sunset experience, it packs so much into one memorable day. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

🏨 Where to Stay in Malta: Best Areas & Places to Stay

Choosing where to stay in Malta can make a difference in how you experience the islands. Although Malta is relatively small, each area has its own atmosphere, and where you choose to stay can shape your sightseeing, dining, transportation, and overall travel experience.

During my visit, I stayed in both Valletta and Sliema, which gave me the opportunity to experience two different sides of Malta. Whether you prefer staying among historic streets and beautiful architecture or along a lively waterfront overlooking the Mediterranean, both areas make wonderful bases for exploring the island.

🏛️ Staying in Valletta

Valletta is a wonderful choice if you want to be surrounded by history, architecture, restaurants, and some of Malta's most famous landmarks. The historic center is largely pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to explore on foot. You'll find beautiful limestone buildings, traditional balconies, cafés, shops, and incredible views throughout the city.

I stayed at a one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Valletta, which was a great base for exploring the capital and experiencing the city beyond the main attractions.

🌊 Staying in Sliema

Sliema offers a different atmosphere, with a lively mix of restaurants, cafés, shopping, coastal walks, and easy access to nearby areas. It's a popular place to stay if you want plenty of dining and entertainment options while remaining close to Valletta and St. Julian's.

I stayed at Palazzo Violetta Boutique, which was in a great location for exploring the area. I could easily walk to St. Julian's, making it convenient to enjoy the restaurants, nightlife, and energy of both neighborhoods.

Where I Stayed: Palazzo Violetta Boutique

📍 Valletta or Sliema: Which Area Should You Choose?

Both are excellent options, but the best choice depends on the kind of experience you're looking for.

  • Choose Valletta if you love history, architecture, historic streets, and being within walking distance of many major attractions.

  • Choose Sliema if you prefer a waterfront setting, restaurants, shopping, coastal walks, and views across the harbor.

If you have enough time, experiencing both areas is a great way to enjoy different sides of Malta, just as I did.

Health & Safety Tips 🛡️

Malta is stunning, from its historic cities and rugged coastlines to its beautiful beaches and island adventures. Whether you're exploring ancient streets, swimming in the Blue Lagoon, or discovering Gozo, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are a few things you'll want to keep in mind before your trip:

☀️ Sun Protection & Heat: Malta's Mediterranean sun can be intense, especially during the summer. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, drink plenty of water, and take breaks in the shade to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion.

🚰 Water Safety: Tap water in Malta is treated and generally safe to drink, although its desalinated and mineral-rich taste may take some getting used to. Bottled water is widely available if you prefer it.

🌊 Beach, Swimming & Cliff Safety: Malta's rocky coastline is beautiful, but beaches and swimming areas can have sharp rocks, slippery surfaces, strong currents, and sudden drop-offs. Wear water shoes where appropriate, pay attention to local warnings, and avoid swimming when conditions are rough. Be especially cautious with cliff jumping. Never jump without knowing the water depth, checking for submerged rocks, and understanding the conditions. A beautiful spot isn't worth a serious injury.

🛡️ Travel Insurance: This is essential! From unexpected illness and accidents to lost luggage or sudden changes in plans, having coverage helps keep the focus on your journey rather than the stress. Whether you're exploring the islands, hiking along the coast, swimming, or taking boat trips, you never know what might happen — that's why travel insurance is non-negotiable.

I personally recommend two trusted options:
