This Tortuga Island adventure from Jacó Beach, Costa Rica, was anything but ordinary. Known for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and tropical island scenery, Tortuga Island is one of Costa Rica’s most popular day trips in the Gulf of Nicoya.
This full-day Tortuga Island tour included transportation from our location, with the crew picking us up before heading to the marina and beginning our catamaran journey across the Pacific Ocean. What started as a dream tropical island excursion quickly became an unforgettable adventure as we encountered rough seas, changing conditions, and a journey that tested us in ways we never expected.
While the day didn’t unfold exactly as planned, it became a reminder that some of the most memorable travel moments come from embracing the unexpected. Despite the challenging conditions, we still had an incredible experience thanks to an amazing crew who took great care of us throughout the journey. We spent time relaxing on a beautiful beach, enjoyed a delicious lunch and drinks, explored the island, and made unforgettable memories while bonding with fellow travelers from around the world.
Unfortunately, because of the rough ocean conditions, we weren't able to snorkel, scuba dive, ride the banana boat, or participate in some of the additional water excursions that are typically offered. While we missed out on those experiences, the day was still filled with laughter, connection, incredible scenery, and moments we'll never forget.

For our Tortuga Island adventure, Jacó Beach was the perfect home base for exploring Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast. Located just a short distance from the marina, Jacó makes it easy to experience popular day trips like Tortuga Island while also enjoying beautiful beaches, local restaurants, nightlife, and the laid-back Pura Vida lifestyle.
We stayed at Casa Hazel Airbnb, which gave us a comfortable place to relax after our adventures and a convenient location for exploring the area. If you’re planning a Tortuga Island day trip from Jacó, staying nearby allows you to experience both the island excursion and everything this popular coastal destination has to offer.
